How to Work with Your Local Authority

In order for local authorities to achieve area- wide emissions reductions, it is vital for them to work with businesses and other public sector organisations. This is where it is beneficial to build relations with your local authority in order to tie into existing local projects or initiatives and make the most of available local authority resources.

It is worth talking to your local authority about how your Travel Plan can tie into their overall travel planning themes is areas such as health and wellbeing, emissions reduction and accessibility.

The other aspect of working with local authorities is one of planning. Having a robust Travel Plan in place can assist with planning permission applications. Being seen to be considering and tackling your organisation’s impact on the local environment will be looked upon favourably.

Benefits of working with your local authority:

  • Inviting them to attend Steering Group meetings – this is their opportunity to inform on local authority initiatives as well as your opportunity to seek advice and support for your organisation’s Travel Plan.
  • There may be local authority grants available for sustainable travel initiatives that you can access.
  • Your local authority can link you to other organisations in your area that are also looking to address travel issues.
