Walking

Walking to work is a great way to exercise and helps keep a body fit. 3000 steps in 30 minutes at 3 miles an hour (a moderate pace) burns 150 calories.

Walking that gets the heart pumping can burn fat, build up muscle mass and increase stamina. It can cut the risk of heart disease, breast cancer, colon cancer, diabetes and strokes. Health professionals such as the British Heart Foundation and the National Health Service strongly suggest aiming for 10,000 steps a day at moderate intensity. The average person currently manages around 3,500 to 5,000 steps.

Travel Plan Coordinators don’t need to encourage people to walk to work 5 days a week immediately. Encourage walking at lunchtimes and gradually bring people who live near work around to the idea of walking to work a day or two a week to begin with.

There are many ways to encourage people to walk including fun challenges and events (links to which can be found on this website). There are even sources of funding to help the Coordinator set up a programme of activities.
